There are different types of spreads. VikingRunes contains six of the most popular, which are detailed here.

One Rune Spread (Daily) – Odin’s Rune
This is the simplest use of the runes. By drawing one Rune from the bag, you can get an overview of an entire situation. That single Rune covers the issue, the present conditions and the resolution.

As the name implies, this spread can be visited daily, but it is advised not to over-use this spread; once a day is more than sufficient.
Three Rune Spread (Daily) – Odin’s Rune
This is the traditional way the runes are read. It has been in use for at least 2,000 years ago and is satisfactory for all but the most complicated readings. It is thought that this spread descends from Norse mythology of the Three Norns, who were the sisters that decided the fate of all of mankind.

The Three Rune Spread signifies your past, where you are now, and on what you need to concentrate on for the future, your fate.

The Three Rune Spread enables you to deal with your thoughts as they present themselves at this moment in time. The right-hand rune is for the past, the centre rune for the present and how you stand now, with the left-hand rune representing the future and on what you need to concentrate on to achieve your goals.
Five Rune Spread (Daily) – Odin’s Rune
This spread is designed to simplify complex personal issues into a more structured, less confused and therefore more controlled outcome.

The first rune signifies on overview of the subject; the second identifies the challenge faced to achieve a goal; the third is the action required to meet an objective; the fourth describes any sacrifice that needs to be made, the fifth is the outcome that can realistically be expected if you follow the prescribed path.
The Runic Cross
Also known as the Celtic Cross, it was inspired and adapted from the Tarot and is read in the same manner. It is used to help reveal more detailed thoughts and insights to questions. It does require more effort in the reading and can be a challenge.

This spread consists of six runes, which are then set out in the form of a cross. The layout varies slightly, but always with a column of four cards, with two additional cards being on the same plain as each other, either side of the column and at least halfway up; the height adapted here is exactly halfway.

The runes are described and laid out as follows:
The first rune signifies the Past.
It is placed at the end of the right arm of the cross.

The second rune signifies You Now.
It is placed on the column, the second rune-position from the bottom, so place it so that its top is just below the middle-point of the first rune.

The third rune signifies the Future.
It is placed at the end of the left arm of the cross.

The fourth rune signifies the Foundation.
It is placed at the bottom of the column.

The fifth rune signifies the Challenge.
It is placed on the column, the second rune-position from the top, so place it so that its bottom is just above the middle-point of the first rune.

The sixth and final rune signifies the Outcome.
It is placed at the top of the column.
As already commented, considerable effort is needed in acquiring a considered reading. If clarity is not reached, then draw a seventh rune. This is called the Rune of Resolution and can help to reach the heart of the matter. From this application, the single rune can be selected by running the One Rune Spread.
Three Lifetimes Spread
If you believe in life after death, then you are open to the possibility that you have lived a previous life and, indeed, will live again. It is then just a small step to see the possibilities of all those lives being interlinked, with previous lives affecting your current character and your current existence influencing your future incarnations.

If you can look deep into your spiritual past, you can gain an understanding of your present situation. Answers to anomalies can be reasoned and you can become more understanding and accepting of your current situation. You can also prepare for the deep future, encouraging yourself to develop those aspects that are desirable to you, whether those are characteristics of determination, reliability or honesty, or indeed traditionally less desirable traits such as ruthlessness or cunning.

This spread allows you to look into your past, present and future, not just in this life but beyond.

It consists of five runes, which are set out with a middle column of the equidistant runes, with the remaining two rune placed the same distance apart, to the left and right of the middle of the column’s runes.

The runes are described and laid out as follows:
    Birth and childhood conditions
It is placed at the end of the right arm of the cross.

    Your present
    This is the middle rune.

    Future in this life
It is placed at the end of the left arm of the cross.

    Past incarnation
It is placed at the bottom of the middle column.

    Future incarnation
It is placed at the top of the middle column.
Seven Rune Spread
This complicated spread is split into four sections, with the final section requiring one rune and the remainder requiring two each. This spread allows for more complex questions and offers a deeper insight, but the downside is that much more patience, effort and experience are essential. Each section can be laid out in a more intricate manner that the other spreads

The runes are laid out in a hexagonal layout, with the Result If Advice Taken rune finally being placed in the centre.

The first two runes represent the Problems You Face and they are placed to the top-right, then the top left of the hexagon.

Carrying on in an anti-clockwise direction are placed the runes representing Factors Influencing from the Past. These are therefore placed on the left-middle and then left-bottom of the hexagon.

Finally, still continuing in an anti-clockwise direction are placed the runes representing Advice You Should Take. These are thus placed on the right-bottom and then right-middle of the hexagon.
